Artist Statement
I have been drawing and painting since before I can remember. Through artistic expression, I channel the love and passion I have for the Earth and her creatures, into something tangible, with the power to bring the viewer into stillness and reflection. Being rooted in the Pacific Northwest, this place and its ecosystems are most often what I am deeply inspired by. My empathy reveals itself in my art, through the light of my attention. I am self-taught in the medium of oil paint, gathering skills from community art classes, experimentation, and books from the library. Each painting becomes a work of devotion, diligence, and can take months to complete, as I work from home with reference photos or specimens. I compose my paintings like telling a story, integrating subject and setting, creating moments that could be seen in real life (if you're lucky), or a dream world that is actually made up of this one, where creatures often unseen come full into light. By bringing these species and their home ecosystems into focus, I encourage viewers to be humbled, feel the spark of compassion, and realize our interdependence with all of Earth's life and elements.
